Artist in Residence
The Southern Midlands Council, Tasmania sponsored us through their Artist-in-Residency program to create a brand new collection of paintings entitled ‘Passing Time’.
The Artist-in-Residency allowed us to take a one-month break from our commercial mural practice and use the time to paint artworks with complete freedom and take our portraiture skills to the next level.
Formerly located in the old Oatlands Gaoler’s Residence, the Southern Midlands council housed us in historical sandstone cottage and we exhibited our work for a month in a Victorian shopfront.
We were able to use subjects we’ve met in Oatlands including Alan Townsend, Nathan McGiveron & Linda Fish - all of whom have stories and contributions to the local area. We dived into the history of the area and found historical artefacts such as the dominoes and cards showcased in the local museum, as well as the historic wallpaper samples from homes in the area, which we then included in our oil-on-canvas collection. As we explored Tasmania, we also picked up inspiration from some of the local produce, like the exquisite apricots featured in the piece Sunday Market, and the artistry of local distilleries and wineries shown in the piece Friday Night.
The collection ‘Passing Time’ aptly carries its name as each piece reflects everyday activities that bring us joy. It looks at the simple experiences of bonding with ones around us, without the ongoing pressure of spending money and chasing the next thrill.
